Description

Hello up for auction is a rare meteorite named Miles classified as a rare Iron IIE. This gorgeous slice weighs 9.102 Grams and has a nice polish to both sides, acid etched on one side. A single stone weighing 265 Kg was found in Queensland Australia in 1992 on a shrub farmland.This meteorite is a very rare type of Iron IIE 1 of  16 ever approved, comes with COA cards and display case. The Miles iron meteorite was found in semi-arid farmland. Polishing revealed a kamacite-rich iron meteorite accompanied by quite minor taenite — and a number of ellipsoidal and irregularly shaped silicate inclusions (2-10 mm) commonly bordered by schreibersite margins. The Fe-Ni metal portions are generally those of the IIE iron meteorites (Ni 7.96%; Co 0.433%; Au 1.13 ppm… in an early report). Silicate inclusions frequently contain prominent olivine enclosed in orthopyroxene grains. The orthopyroxene also hosts smaller silicate grains, chromite, phosphate, and Fe-Ni metal. A few inclusions are dominated by other oxides and/or phosphates. Silicates are quite fractured with the fractures now generally penetrated by terrestrial weathering products
Most importantly for its wider implications are the oxygen isotope ratios which suggest a relationship between the Miles meteorite and the H (relatively high iron) geochemical group of ordinary chondrites. These considerations appear to be part of the motivation for some extensive petrographic and geochemical studies which have revealed the variety of mineralogical phases listed here.
Several ~5 kg and other smaller masses remain in Australian Museums and other scientific venues. Approximately ~100 kg has been exported and marketed, usually as much smaller pieces.
