Description
This Brahin meteorite nugget exhibits a high density of olivine (peridot) crystals, set within an iron-nickel matrix. This is a very decorative and intriguing example. The specimen has been professionally stabilized and preserved to prevent rusting.
It has been displayed in my home (southeastern Virginia) for a period with no signs of any problems. For the sake of accuracy, the olivine in ‘natural’ lighting appears a little bit darker than the photographs portray. The difference in lighting is the result of the camera lighting equipment used to photograph the piece for sale. Please look over the many pictures with different background settings and close-ups to give you a true idea of the beauty of this pallasite.
For the size and weight, I have not come across a better example is my collecting years. The sale includes a certificate of authenticity.
Background: Pallasites
represent less than 0.2% of all known meteorites. They
are considered to be the result of mixing between solid silicate (lower) mantle and liquid metal core at the core-mantle boundary of a fully differentiated asteroid. The mixture took place after a
cataclysmic impact event that penetrated deep enough to remove both mantle and core material that was mixed in a liquid state. This mixture of iron-nickel and olivine then cooled over millions of years in the zero gravity environment of space.
