BORN AND RAISED ON THE EAST SIDE OF
COLUMBUS
, RICHENBACKER WENT TO WORK REPAIRING AUTOMOBILES AT THE AGE OF TWELVE AFTER HIS FATHER DIED. IN 1910, RICKENBACKER BEGAN HIS CAREER AS A PROFESSIONAL RACE CAR DRIVER. HE PARTICIPATED IN FOUR INDY 500S, INCLUDING THE VERY FIRST IN 1911 AND ESTABLISHED THE WORLD RECORD OF 134 MPH AT A RACE AT DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA IN 1914,
DURING WWI, RICHENBACKER BECAME KNOWN AS THE "ACE OF ACES" SHOOTING DOWN 26 GERMAN AIRCRAFT. ALONG WITH THE MEDAL OF HONOR, RICKENBACKER RECEIVED SEVEN DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSSES, THE LEGION OF HONOR MEDAL AND THE CROIX DE GUERRE. HE RETURNED HOME TO COLUMBUS AS A NATIONAL HERO.
IN 1920 HE STARTED RICKENBACKER MOTOR COMPANY AND IN 1927 PURCHASED THE
INDIANAPOLIS
MOTOR
SPEEDWAY
. IN 1938, RICKENBACKER BECAME PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANGER OF EASTERN AIRLINES AND WAS NAMED CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD IN 1953.
